Coaching methodology has its roots in a history dating back to the time of Socrates. Most coaches use the Socratic method of deep listening and asking powerful questions to help their clients get in touch with the issues that are holding them back from accomplishing their goals and uncovering possibilities where before it appeared there were none.

Coaching draws from the fields of adult learning theory, management theory, psychology, philosophy, spirituality, and consulting. Each coach has a unique style and genre of coaching they work with. Some coaches blend their previous work experience into the coaching model such as parenting coaches, health coaches, etc.

Coaching is not counseling. Counselors are mental health experts and focus on medical or clinical diagnosis of pathology or relationship conflicts. Coaches see their clients as the experts of their own life and are focused on helping a client learn and develop. Coaching focuses on obtainable goals and possibilities and works with generally functional people desiring a better situation in life.
